KELT: The Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope

چکیده
Transits of bright stars offer a unique opportunity to study detailed properties of extrasolar planets that cannot be determined through radial-velocity observations. We propose a technique to find such systems using all-sky small-aperture transit surveys. The optimal telescope design for finding transits of bright stars is a 5 cm “telescope” with a 4k × 4k camera. We are currently building such a system and expect to detect ∼ 10 bright star transits after one year of operation.

Independent Discovery of a Sub-Earth in the Habitable Zone Around a Very Close Solar-Mass Star
With the wealth of planets that have been discovered over the past ∼ 20 years, the field can broadly be divided into two regimes. For understanding broad occurrence and formation rates, large numbers of planets allow for population statistics to be calculated, and this work preferentially tends towards fainter planets (and fainter host stars) to allow for a large number of detections. The secon...
متن کاملSecondary Eclipse Observations of the Highly Irradiated Transiting Brown Dwarf Kelt-1b
We present secondary eclipse observations of the highly irradiated transiting brown dwarf KELT-1b. These observations represent the first constraints on the atmospheric dynamics of a highly irradiated brown dwarf, the atmospheres of irradiated giant planets at high surface gravity, and the atmospheres of brown dwarfs that are dominated by external, rather than internal, energy. Using the Spitze...
متن کاملOptical Design and Fabrication for an Extremely Large Telescope
Three large segmented-mirror telescopes already exist -Keck I, Keck II and Hobby Eberly. Others are in work or have been proposed, including the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), the Large Aperture MultiObject Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), the Mexican Infrared-Optical Telescope (TIM) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). These projects serve as the starting point for the design of ...
متن کاملStellar Crowding and the Science Case for Extremely Large Telescopes
We present a study of the effect of crowding on stellar photometry. We develop an analytical model through which we are able to predict the error in magnitude and color for a given star for any combination of telescope resolution, stellar luminosity function, background surface brightness, and distance. We test our predictions with Monte Carlo simulations of the LMC globular cluster NGC 1835, f...
متن کاملAssembly rules and competition in desert rodents.
North American desert rodents have long been a model system for the study of community structure and dynamics. Field experiments and nonmanipulative observations have provided consistent evidence that interspecific competition influences spatial patterns and dynamic processes of community organization. Some of the evidence comes from assembly rules, which document how the species that coexist i...
